Tank mistakes PDF Print E-mail
  • The first common tank mistake is getting a 2000 litre slimline tank down the side of the house or elsewhere.  We’ll go into more detail below, but the VEG Golden Tank Size Rule of Thumb is this:  figure out the largest tank you can possibly afford and fit in, and then get one slightly larger.  A 2000 litre tank is more symbolic than functional (though it is better than nothing!) for any respectable edible garden.  It will fill in a day of good rain and be empty in two or three days of irrigation.
  • The second common tank mistake is squandering fall, or running water down into a tank below the house.  Get the tank inlet as close in height to the gutter output as possible, so you can let gravity get the water where it needs to go (look mum, no pumps!).
  • The third common tank mistake is assuming that the tank has to go right underneath the downpipe.  This is usually an inconvenient place for a tank and there are simple tricks you can use to place the tank out of the way in the back corner, all covered in our main tank article.
